What is AI PPE detection?
Traditional PPE compliance monitoring relies on supervisory observation — a resource-intensive approach that misses violations whenever a supervisor is not present. AI PPE detection uses computer vision to monitor work areas continuously, identifying workers who are not wearing the required protective equipment.
Cameras analyse video feeds in real time, detecting hard hats, high-visibility vests, safety glasses, gloves and respiratory protection. When non-compliance is detected the system captures photo evidence and sends an immediate alert to supervisors, enabling rapid intervention.
Compliance analytics track PPE usage by location, shift and individual worker. That data identifies areas needing additional training or enforcement, whilst demonstrating due diligence to regulators and insurers.

Frequently asked questions
What is AI PPE detection?
AI PPE detection uses computer vision to analyse camera feeds and automatically identify whether workers are wearing the personal protective equipment required for their area, such as hard hats, hi-vis vests, safety glasses and gloves. Non-compliance triggers photo evidence capture and an immediate supervisor alert.
Which types of PPE can LifeSafety.ai detect?
The system detects 12 or more equipment types, including hard hats, hi-vis vests and jackets, safety glasses, face shields, welding masks, gloves, safety boots, ear protection, face masks, respirators and safety harnesses. Requirements are configured per site or zone.
Is AI PPE monitoring legal in the UK?
Yes, provided it is done proportionately. Workplace video monitoring is lawful under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 where there is a legitimate interest, workers are informed, a data protection impact assessment is completed and retention is limited. ICO guidance on monitoring at work sets out the expectations in full.
Do I need special cameras?
No. The system works with standard IP cameras already installed on most sites, and also supports a standalone scanner for entry-point checks where fixed camera coverage is not practical.
How does PPE detection help with compliance?
It provides continuous, evidenced monitoring rather than spot checks. That supports the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 duty to ensure PPE is actually used, and the timestamped photo record demonstrates proactive due diligence to regulators and insurers.
